ABOUT ZENUML
We believe every idea has a form in which it becomes obvious.
ZenUML is diagram-as-code: it turns text into sequence diagrams and other UML diagrams. It is developed by P&D Vision Pty Ltd in Melbourne, Australia, and runs in Confluence, the browser, JetBrains IDEs, VS Code and on the desktop.

WHAT MAKES ZENUML DIFFERENT
- Diagrams live as code in your own Confluence and render in the browser, not on a ZenUML server. PlantUML is the exception.
- One app, six diagram types.
- Sequence diagrams use the core concepts of UML, written in a text syntax close to code.
ZENUML AND DIAGRAMLY
Two products, one team.
ZenUML is a sequence-diagram technology and open ecosystem developed by P&D Vision. It can be used on its own or as an external plugin for Mermaid.
ZenUML for Confluence is a mature, full-featured Confluence diagram app, with diagram-as-code and API specification workflows. Diagramly for Confluence is a separate, AI-first product. Both are actively maintained; Diagramly for Confluence is not a renamed version of ZenUML for Confluence.
Diagramly is built and operated by AI Kangaroo PTY LTD. Our Confluence and Jira apps are listed on the Atlassian Marketplace under the vendor name P&D Vision.
OUR STORY SO FAR
From hand-drawn to diagram-as-code.
2007
At Motorola, Peng drew sequence diagrams by hand to help the team understand different solutions. The experience established the value of sequence diagrams as a communication tool.
The journey behind ZenUML ↗2010
At a ThoughtWorks HTML5 programming contest, Peng built the first prototype that generated sequence diagrams from text, using a DSL and Canvas.
Simple-Sequence ↗2013
Before moving to Australia, Peng rebuilt the prototype in Angular and added CSS style customisation.

Where we’re going
We are growing Diagramly so that teams can use AI to express, share and maintain complex information and systems more naturally. ZenUML will continue as the technical foundation and open ecosystem focused on sequence diagrams, rendering and developer workflows. We will keep exploring how AI agents work with Confluence, and more diagram types that can be maintained as text and code. These are long-term directions, not commitments to specific features or release dates.
HOW ZENUML MAKES MONEY
Free to start. Paid plans for teams.
In Confluence, ZenUML Lite is free and includes all six diagram types with up to 100 diagrams per space. ZenUML Full is a paid Atlassian Marketplace subscription that removes the per-space limit and adds the Diagramly AI assistant and priority support.
The online editor is free to use, with optional Basic and Plus subscriptions, billed monthly or yearly.

Creator of ZenUML, with a background in software architecture and financial systems. Peng was a Solution Designer at National Australia Bank from August 2019 to May 2021 and has also consulted at PwC.
